We had a lovely warm glow here at Her RL Towers when the girls from Batley got to fulfil their dream of a rugby league tour of Australia. In the coming weeks we hope to share some of their stories, about what it meant to them and how it changed their outlook on life. Well done girls, and of course to Craig Taylor, our Man of the Year (sponsored by Art in Place) who helped make it happen.
This year we turn our attentions to another cause, and we’ve chosen to support an event that is all about raising awareness of Motor Neurone Disease.
Five years ago, Warrington’s former player and assistant coach, Paul Darbyshire, died of the disease at the age of just 41. Just before he died his friends organised a bike ride from the club where he worked, Munster RU, to his former club Warrington.
This year, on the fifth anniversary, we are getting involved in the organisation of a memorial bike ride. The target again is to raise £1000 for MNDA, for research into a cure for the condition. So, our Pat Price Project for 2016 is Bike Ride 4 Darbs.
Rugby League fans will also remember Mike Gregory, the former captain of Warrington who also died from a form of the disease. He was one of the sport’s finest and his death came far too soon. It’s such a sad coincidence that this awful disease should strike teammates, and take them from us in their prime.
We hope you can help support the project this year, by taking part, volunteering or simply donating to MNDA, the charity raising money for treatment and raising awareness.
