BY ANGELA POWERS

Was it the brilliant sunshine which tempted a good-sized crowd to Sharlston? Or was it more likely the prospect of a hot-blooded encounter between two towns whose rivalry is legendary? I’d say the latter…and those who came to watch basked in the heat of this fierce derby match between Wakefield Trinity and Castleford Tigers.

The rising temperatures suited the visitors best, admitted Wakefield coach Jo Phillips. The Tigers side was a relatively youthful one, and whereas Wakefield’s brute strength might be an advantage in cooler conditions, they knew that they’d have to find ways of conserving energy in the heat.

Both sides were out to get some pride back after big defeats the previous weekend. Castleford had gone down 64-0 to Bradford Bulls, Wakefield had suffered an 84-0 defeat at Featherstone. And although they finally lost this one 38-4, it was a much-improved performance.

Later this week you will be able to see highlights from the game,  but here are some pictures from a great day in the sun.  Feel free to re-use but please try to credit @Her_RL.
