Wigan got off to the best of starts in the new look women’s Super league competition with a 54-0 beating of last year’s Grand Finalists Featherstone Rovers.
There were braces for Vanessa Temple, Sarah Harrison and Rachel Thompson in the 11 try rout, a result that surprised even their coach, Amanda Wilkinson.
“It’s not very often that I’m speechless but today honestly, the girls really aimed up. We’ve trained so hard and it’s been a long pre-season and we’ve had to go through a lot, but I’m just so proud today. Defensively they were challenged through their own errors in the first half, but they just aimed up each time, and for me they gave so much more than I would have ever expected.
“You’d think with the score-line like it was today that’d I’d be happy. I’ve taken quite a lot from that game but there’s still a lot we need to work on. There was still some players who were unsure where they needed to be in defence, where they need to be at marker and in attack we’ve still got a lot of work to do. We’ll be going into training next week with plenty of things to work on.”
