Learning curve for Widnes debutantes as Barrow triumph
Widnes 14-30 Barrow
April 22, 2018
In their first home game of the season, Widnes Vikings gave a battling performance before falling to a 30-14 defeat against a Barrow outfit.
Fielding a side in which only six players had played a competitive game of Rugby League before, Widnes started the game with a crunching tackle by Olivia Miah.
This set the tone for a dominant opening 15 minutes in which they spurned good try scoring opportunities. However, the pressure eventually told and a barnstorming run by Catherine Bazley-Harrison saw her shrug off Barrow defenders to score the opening try. Demi-Lea Fisher was unlucky with the conversion as it hit the post and bar but Widnes held a deserved four point lead.
Jenny Moss made an incisive break to put Widnes on the attack again but on the last tackle, Fisher’s kick was scooped up by Barrow who went 90 metres before being tackled. Widnes then conceded a penalty and seconds later, the impressive Barrow full back, Michelle Larkin, scored to level matters.
Widnes continued on the offensive and Kia Doyle, who had an outstanding game, stormed over the line to score her side’s second try. Fisher converted the try.
In the remaining nine minutes of the half, Barrow started to take control. It was Larkin once more who scored, this time from 40 metres, and Jodie Litherland converted.
Litherland was also on hand to slot over a penalty just before the break and Widnes, somewhat unluckily, found themselves 10-12 down at half time.
Half-Time: Widnes Vikings 10-12 Barrow
Widnes were able to bring on Nicholette Postlethwaite for the second half and she made an immediate impact with several defence busting runs.
From one of these the the ball was moved right and Sarah Bazley-Harrison ran hard and fast to touch down in the corner.
Demi-Lea Fisher then had to leave the field with a shoulder injury and with other players carrying knocks, Barrow struck again. Larkin completed her hat trick, and then Jodie Crawford took advantage of a kick rebound to score another. Litherland’s two conversions made it 14-24 to the visitors.
As Widnes tried to get back in the game, errors creeped into their performance as they tried to reduce the deficit.
Barrow took advantage of this by scoring a fifth try when winger Elizabeth Herring scored. Litherland, who was behind everything that Barrow did, added the extras and at 14-30 the game was beyond Widnes.
They did have further opportunities to score but were repelled, however, this was another encouraging performance by the Vikings Women.
